Ingredients:

  • 1 pound extra-lean ground beef
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 4 cloves of garlic, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 can small kidney beans or pinto beans, preferably drained and rinsed low sodium
  • 1 1/2 cups tomato sauce without salt
  • 2 tablespoons of tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • 8 whole-grain burger buns


How to make:

  1. Fry the bacon and onions in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat for 5 minutes, crumbling the meat into crumbs as it cooks. Pour the drippings out of the pan and discard them. Add the garlic, jalapenos, and red peppers and cook 5 more minutes, stirring occasionally. Stir in remaining ingredients, reduce heat to low, and simmer for another 5 minutes. Place a half-cup spoonful of the mixture onto each loaf and serve.
